Mayor of London endorses pro-immigration campaign group set up by Gavin Barwell MP

Date Filed:  Friday, October 05, 2012

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson today endorsed the establishment of new cross party immigration group Migration Matters, and urged Ministers to allow "the best and the brightest to come here, contribute and thrive".

Speaking in response to a letter from the group's director, Atul Hatwal, in which Mr Hatwal expressed concern at the negative impact of the tone of the migration debate on the capital's Olympic legacy, the Mayor responded:

"Your principle aim is an important one in an area often riddled with inaccurate claims, differing opinion and, consequently, strains and tension".

Describing how the Olympic and Paralympic games have provided a "tremendous boost, showcasing Britain and London right around the globe", he adds:

"The priority for my administration is stimulating jobs and growth in the capital. In an increasingly globalised economy, success depends on encouraging a talented and diverse workforce to London".

And he concludes:

"In short we want a well managed migration system that secures our borders and allows the best and the brightest to come here, contribute and thrive".

Responding to the comments, Migration Matters co-chair Barbara Roche, a former Homer Office and immigration minister in the previous Labour government said, "This is an important and welcome statement from the Mayor. It underlines how important immigration is as a wealth and job creator, and how vital it is to maintaining London's position as a global economic centre".

Co-chair Gavin Barwell, Conservative MP for Croydon Central and government Parliamentary Private Secretary added:

"As a London MP I know what the Olympic and Paralympics meant for my constituents. But it's vital we now maximize the opportunities this presents to build a lasting economic and social legacy; not just for London, but for Britain as a whole. It's clear that balanced migration is a key part of securing that legacy, and it's excellent to see Boris Johnson extending his invitation to the brightest and the best".
