Action to tackle under-age drinking in New Addington
20/10/2009 22:02:00

One of the issues that regularly gets raised with me by New Addington residents is under-age drinking and resulting anti-social behaviour, particularly around Central Parade.

There's been a street drinking ban in place for some time but it hasn't solved the problem because the young people involved consume the alochol elsewhere before congregating on Central Parade.

So this week we are announcing two new measures to try to tackle the problem.

First we have put in place a dispersal area, giving the police power to break up groups of young people.

Second, this evening I launched a Community Alcohol Partnership to try to tackle both the demand for alcohol among young people and the supply to them.

The idea, which was piloted in St Neots in Huntingdonshire, is for the Council and police to work with schools to educate young people about the dangers of excessive drinking and with retailers, sharing intelligence and best practice particularly with regard to adults buying alcohol on behalf of under 18s, which is a big problem in New Addington.

If the idea works, we hope to roll it out to other areas of Croydon where under-age drinking is a problem.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
