David Cameron calls for a General Election to be held as soon as possible
18/05/2009 22:04:00

David Cameron has today called for a General Election to be held as soon as possible after the European elections on 4th June. He argues that the only way to resolve the current crisis of confidence in our political system is for everyone to have the chance to pass their verdict on the behaviour of their MP.

I think he is absolutely right. When you look at the scale of problems facing our country today - economic, social and environmental - it is really important that we have a Parliament that people trust. That is clearly not the case at present and the only way to get back that trust is to let people elect a new Parliament.

Technically a General Election doesn’t have to be held for another twelve months but we can’t wait that long - our whole political system is currently paralysed.

I guess, given that the Conservative Party has a significant lead in the opinion polls, some people are going to say that this call for a General Election as soon as possible is motivated by self-interest. But as David said today, a General Election now would present big challenges for all the main parties, the Conservative Party included. We all have MPs who have behaved unacceptably and would be in danger of losing their seats if there was an election now. But ultimately we have to be guided by what is in the national interest, not our party's interest. Letting the current situation drag on for another twelve months cannot be in the best interests of the country.

If you want to support David's call for a General Election to be held as soon as possible you can do so here.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
