Planning madness part 2
07/03/2008 16:42:00

Today I went along to have a look at a housing association development to the rear of 160-190 Harrington Road. The Council had turned down the planning application but that decision was over-turned by a Government inspector from Bristol. The residents of Harrington Road used to look out on South Norwood Country Park. They are now over-looked by a three-storey development literally a few feet from their back fences that removes all their privacy.

This raises two questions. First, why should an unaccountable Government inspector be able to overturn the Council’s decision. You may not always agree with decisions councillors make, but at least you can vote them out at the next Election. Second, a private sector developer would never have put that many units on such a cramped site. Why should people who cannot afford to buy their own homes be expected to put up with it?

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
