Palace promoted!
28/05/2013 15:14:00

Crystal Palace's victory in the play-off final was a testament to the hard work of Ian Holloway and his players but most of all to the owners, who have turned the club's fortunes around.

Three short years ago, Crystal Palace were on the brink of liquidation. I remember it very well because I had only just been elected and overnight I was contacted by about 1,000 Eagles fans asking me to intervene on the club's behalf with its bank and the Government given that said bank was partially state owned.

Everyone was hugely grateful to the new owners for stepping in and that gratitude has only grown over time. They've provided the clear leadership and sound management the club needed, they've invested in bringing through local talent and they've got their reward. Now they need to ensure that the club's stay in the Premiership is longer than on the previous four occasions without jeopardising its long-term future. But that's a challenge for the next 12 months - today they deserve to celebrate an incredible turnaround.

I’m sure a few fans will be nursing a sore head as they go into work after the bank holiday. They’ve waited eight long years for this moment.

And for the town as a whole it's another piece of great news. Croydon's a place on the up at the moment.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
