Who thought this was a good idea?
22/04/2009 21:17:00

Watching this video on the 10 Downing Street website, three thoughts occur.

First, on the substantive issue, how the Prime Minister can think that the way to improve public confidence in MPs’ pay and remuneration is to pay them an allowance just for turning up for work every day in addition to their salary is beyond me.

Second, it appears that someone has told the Prime Minister that he needs to smile more. He hasn’t quite got the hang of when to do it yet though.

Third, I can see why the Prime Minister’s advisers thought making an announcement on YouTube was a good idea - it’s meant to show that he’s in touch with the younger generation and means he doesn’t have to answer any awkward questions from journalists afterwards. But if this was the best take they could get, who on earth thought it was a good idea to put it in the public domain?

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
