National award for Croydon housing
17/10/2012 09:15:00

Croydon Landlord Services (CLS), which manages Croydon Council’s housing stock, has won a national accolade at the Association of Retained Council Housing (ARCH) awards.

The award was for CLS’s All Ages project, which has brought together residents from different generations to discuss concerns and issues in their local communities. The steering group consists of 10 adults and 11 young people and they have run family fun days on five housing estates; launched an All Ages magazine called ‘2 Views’, which is produced by young people and adults and distributed to housing estates; and organised the All Ages Conference, which was held at Crystal Palace Football Club last November.

They have also delivered improvements in different parts of the borough, including:

• Lodge Lane Community Garden, which was created from communal land next to council flats by tenants and won a share of the B&Q garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, along with a certificate from food growing campaigners Capital Growth;

• the Hares Bank play area, which was transformed from an area blighted by anti-social behaviour into a popular park which received the Mayor of London’s Safer Parks bronze award 2012; and

• an active lifestyle co-ordinator, who is running a three month programme on eight estates for young people and adults to get fit.

The Council has come in for some stick recently in the media about the number of people in bed and breakfast accommodation and the quality of that accommodation - indeed, I have raised concerns myself. But it is only fair to recognise that it is dealing with huge pressures at the moment - and that its housing department is consistently recognised as one of the best in the country.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
