Another burst water main on Turnpike Link
02/08/2012 16:02:00

There have been numerous burst water mains on Turnpike Link over the last year. I have therefore today written to Martin Baggs, the CEO of Thames Water, as follows:

“Dear Mr Baggs,

I have been approached by my constituents who live on the Turnpike Link Estate (Park Hill, Croydon) with regards to the frequent occurrence of burst water mains and the resultant inconvenience on their estate.

There have been some 10 incidents of water mains bursting on the estate over the past year, i.e. an average of nearly one per month, the most recent occurring today (2nd August 2012).

Clearly this is not an acceptable situation. Not only does it cause inconvenience and disruption to my constituents in that they are without water for some time; cannot gain access to their property due to the flood; the resultant road repairs; the damage to the estate and the surrounding amenities – the repair of which results in major increases to their estate services charges, but there is also the major loss of water.

Surely it is a false economy on the part of Thames Water Authority to just patch and mend what is clearly a water main system that is beyond its sell by date? The residents are of the opinion that now is the time to properly replace the water pipes on the estate.

I would be grateful if you could investigate this situation and let me know what action Thames Water Authority will be taking to ensure that there are no further leaks on this estate.

Yours sincerely,

Gavin Barwell MP

Croydon Central.”

I'll of course update residents as soon as I hear any more news.
