Honouring our servicemen and women
26/03/2009 22:06:00

I’ve just returned from a family holiday to Orlando (if you can call being dragged round various themeparks by a six year-old and a three year-old a holiday - if I never hear the theme tune to It’s A Small World again it will be too soon).

One thing that really struck me while I was there was the completely different attitude Americans have to their armed services (and indeed to ours). One example - we went to see the Shamu show at Sea World and before the show began the presenter asked anyone in the audience who was a current or former member of the US or British armed forces to stand up and then invited the audience to applaud them. Can you imagine that ever happening here?

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
