Boris comes to Croydon to launch major tram overhaul
16/06/2012 15:52:00

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, came to town today to launch a brand new tram service and an additional six trams, a welcome example of his and the Council’s ongoing commitment to invest in Croydon’s infrastructure.

With demand on the Tramlink increasing in recent years, the Council wisely decided to invest £3m towards the £16m needed to buy the six new state-of-the-art trams.

The frequency of the tram service on the busiest section between Thearpia Lane and Elmers End will increase to tackle overcrowding, with a new route adding an extra four trams per hour to the current six.

This kind of investment in key infrastructure is critical if we want more people living in the town centre and we want to attract employers to invest in the town.

Tramlink is one of the town’s key assets. With extra capacity now secured, we need to get on with extending the network – starting with Crystal Palace.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
