My thoughts are with David and Samantha Cameron
25/02/2009 23:24:00

There is nothing anyone can say to lessen the grief they must be feeling following the death of their son, Ivan. I know though that when I lost my father four years ago it did at least help to know that my friends and colleagues were thinking of me.

I thought the Prime Minister's remarks to the House of Commons today struck exactly the right tone. It is tragic that the leaders of both the major parties should have had to endure the unimagineable pain of losing a child.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Tony Newman, the Leader of the Labour Group on Croydon Council, who very graciously began this evening's Council meeting by asking me to pass on his and his colleagues' condolences to David and Samantha, which I shall certainly do.

Several people have asked me where to send flowers. David and Samantha have asked that, rather than sending flowers, those wishing to express their condolences give a donation to one of the following five charities:

- Mencap;

- Friends of St Mary's Hospital (email friendssmh@imperial.nhs.uk);

- Friends of Jack Tizard School (South Africa Road, London W12 7PA; 020 8735 3590);

Helen & Douglas House; and

Shooting Star House.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
