Launch of the Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Festival
06/01/2012 22:33:00

This evening, I attended the launch of the Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Festival at Croydon Town Hall.

Coleridge-Taylor spent most of his life in Croydon. He was a prolific choral and orchestral composer and is probably best remembered for his major choral trilogy The Song of Hiawatha, which was performed annually at the Royal Albert Hall, which gives you an idea how popular his music was at the time.

He died in 1912 at the age of 37 so the festival marks the centennary of his death. The highlight will be the world premiere of his long-thought lost opera Thelma by Surrey Opera at the Fairfield Halls on the 9th, 10th and 11th of February. You can book tickets here.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
