The need for a no strike agreement on the Underground
23/06/2011 13:11:00

It was transport questions in the House this morning and, despite being at the bottom of the order paper, I got called. I asked a question about the need for a no strike agreement on the Underground, preferably one negotiated with the trade unions but failing that enacted by law.

The Undeground is a vital public service. Every time we have a strike, it costs London's economy millions of pounds and inconveniences thousands of my constituents. It really isn’t acceptable that a minority of RMT members can hold the capital to ransom, particularly when no great issue of principle is involved (the recent strike, for example, was in response to the dismissal of a member of staff and was called despite the fact that an industrial tribunal into the decision is still ongoing).

The Minister replied that the Government had no plans to change the law at present but would keep the matter under review.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
