Protecting the character of the town
22/10/2008 07:35:00

The Council has designated a number of new Conservation Areas and Local Areas of Special Character (LASCs), both of which give some protection against the kind of insensitive development that has begun to change the character of the town in recent years.

The new Conservation Areas in Croydon Central are 49-91 Wellesley Road, St Bernards in Park Hill and Chatsworth Road. There is a strong presumption against demolition in Conservation Areas and planning permission is needed for even minor changes such as cladding or installing dormer windows or a satellite dish that can be seen from the street. In addition, anyone proposing to cut down or lop a tree has to contact the Council.

The new LASCs in Croydon Central are 15-55 Stanhope Road, 10-49 Bingham Road and the Laud Street area. The criteria for designation as a LASC is less strenuous than for a Conservation Area but the idea is similar - to preserve good examples of more familiar developments.

These decisions are evidence of the change in the Council's planning policies under a Conservative administration - the previous Labour administration didn't designate a single conservation area in 12 years.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
