Tesco's plans for Purley Way
21/05/2011 07:41:00

Yesterday afternoon, I went to an exhibition about Tesco's plans for a supermarket about the same size as their Elmers End store on the John Lewis At Home site on the Purley Way (which they own - John Lewis have just over seven years left on their lease).

Overall, I was impressed with what I saw. I think the proposals could be a triple win for Croydon.

First, they would be good news for the Purley Way - more jobs, an improved green link between South Quarter and Waddon Ponds and the possibility of a link road between the various stores, removing traffic from the main road.

Second, they mean Tesco's have given up on plans to expand their Purley store.

And third, they increase the chance of getting John Lewis into the town centre.

My only caveat was the implications for traffic flow on the A23 - difficult to assess until we see detailed plans for the junction they propose.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
