Learning the lessons from the 7/7 bombings
09/05/2011 21:54:00

There are some events which are so life or world changing that you will always remember what you were doing when you heard the news. One of those events was the suicide bombings on the London transport network on Thursday 7th July 2005, which killed 52 people and injured over 700.

Last Friday, the coroner Lady Justice Hallet’s inquest into the bombings was published. Although Lady Justice Hallet found that failings on the part of any organisation or individual did not cause or contribute to any of the deaths, she made nine recommendations which she says “may save lives in the future”.

This afternoon, I asked the Home Secretary, Theresa May, about the Government’s response to the coroner’s findings. She has published an initial response today and will be making a detailed one shortly.

Hopefully a tragedy of this sort will never happen again but in case it does Londoners need to be reassured that the appropriate lessons have been learned.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
