New play area in South Norwood Country Park
23/10/2008 23:49:00

This afternoon, I attended the opening of the new play area in South Norwood Country Park along with Andrew Pelling and my Council colleague Steve Hollands, the Cabinet Member for Culture & Sport.

The Country Park was opened in 1989 by the then Conservative Council and included a large and very popular children’s play area. When Labour were running the Council between 1994 and 2006, they allowed the play area to deteriorate and in spring 2007 the condition of the remaining equipment was such that it had to be removed. Now, back under Conservative control, the Council has invested £180,000 of Lottery funds in providing a new play area with equipment for children ranging from toddlers to teenagers and facilities for parents and carers.

The new area is located nearer the visitor centre to improve the visibility of the site and the window in the pitch and putt kiosk is now on the playground side to enable the Park Ranger to keep an eye on the play area when he is on duty. The area has high fencing and will be locked at night to reduce the anti-social behaviour that was such a problem at the old play area.

Woodside has the largest number of young people of any ward in the borough and it’s great that our Conservative Council is investing in new facilities like this to give them something to do.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
