Lobbying for Croydon schools
14/12/2010 16:20:00

Today, I led a delegation including Mike Fisher and Tim Pollard, the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Council, and Maureen Martin and Andy Crofts from the Quest Academy to see Lord Hill, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools, about capital funding for the new Quest Academy in particular and for schools in Croydon more generally.

The Quest Academy, which is sponsored by the Coloma Trust, replaced Selsdon High in September. I visited the school on 5th November and was very impressed with the changes that have already been made. However, the school is in urgent need of major capital investment, as are a number of other schools in the borough.

More generally, Croydon is seeing a significant increase in the number of primary age children at the moment and the Council needs financial support from the Government to help provide additional places. It is very concerned that the formula which the Government uses to assess the need for capital investment doesn’t take sufficient account of these demographic pressures.

It was a very constructive meeting and I felt we got across both points very effectively.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
