Learning more about climate change
08/11/2010 23:53:00

This afternoon, along with a handful of other MPs I attended a fascinating workshop about climate change.

Climate change is one of those issues that divides opinion - some people contact me pressing for the Government to do more and others don’t believe it or take the view that it wouldn’t be a bad thing if the UK had a Mediterranean climate! But of course it’s not just about what happens in the UK - if the climate warms significantly, it would make some areas of the world uninhabitable. When the climate has changed naturally in the past, humans have simply migrated to more hospitable parts of the planet but now we have nearly 7 billion people and national borders that would be much more problematic if not impossible.

We had a chance to question Professor Sir Brian Hoskins, one of the world's leading climate scientists, about the latest scientific evidence and he presented compelling evidence that the level of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere has increased significantly since the Industrial Revolution and that we have seen a general warming trend over that period together with a reduction in the size of the Arctic ice sheet and a rise in sea levels. Uncertainty remains about exactly how much the Earth will warm if we carry on as we are and there is a debate to be had about the balance we should strike between prevention and mitigation but don't let recent media coverage of leaked emails from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit and errors in the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change's report relating to Himalayan glaciers lull you into thinking there isn't a problem.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
