Labour councillors seek to block improvements to East Croydon station
01/10/2010 18:29:00

Lots of people in the constituency use East Croydon station to commute up to central London and many more use it from time to time. Virtually everyone I speak to agrees that the ticket hall can't come with the volume of passengers using the station and that access to the platforms for the disabled and elderly is poor.

Virtually everyone I speak to agrees that one of the problems with Croydon town centre is that the railway and Wellesley Road form two major barriers that are difficult to cross.

To tackle these two problems, the Council and Network Rail are planning to jointly fund a bridge over the railway between Cherry Orchard Road and Lansdowne Road that would provide access to East Croydon station (including by lift) at the other end of the platforms from the existing ticket hall.

I think this is a great scheme. Imagine my surprise when I read in today's Advertiser that Labour councillors are opposed to the Council helping to fund it. At a time when I am desperately lobbying to protect public investment in Croydon, they are going round telling people we don't want this money. Incredible.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
