Four days in Birmingham
07/10/2010 07:33:00

Just back from a very busy four days at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham.

I spoke at two fringe meetings, the first on how to improve literacy and the second on how to make our asylum system fairer and more efficient. I also had useful meetings with Nestlé (as discussed in a previous post, I have offered to act as an intermediary between the company and Croydon Council to try to ensure that they stay in the borough) and with the new owners of Gatwick Airport who are planning to invest £1 billion in the airport over the next few years, which is great news from a number of Croydon-based businesses as well as passengers. And I helped out with our social action project (each year, we try to make a difference to the city that hosts our conference). This year, we were renovating the Dolphin Centre, a rundown and disused building in the Alum Rock area of Birmingham, for use as a community centre.

The big news story was the Chancellor’s announcement that from 2013 any household containing a higher rate taxpayer won’t receive Child Benefit, about which a separate post follows.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
