Spent the day calling on potential Conservative supporters who vote by post in Woodside and Addiscombe followed by a house meeting in Shirley (at my mum's house - thanks mum!).

Stopped for lunch at The Joiners' Arms on Woodside Green, where we listened open-mouthed to the recording of Gordon Brown calling one of his own supporters who had dared to raise the issue of immigration "a bigoted woman". At least everyone in Croydon Central who shares her concern now knows what the Prime Minister thinks of them.

It's behaviour like this that has brought politics into disrepute - he tells the lady to her face that she comes from a good family then as soon as he thinks he is in private he starts slagging her off.

But I thought the strangest thing about the whole episode was Brown's reaction to the conversation - "That was a disaster. You should never have put me with that woman. Whose idea was that? .. It was just ridiculous". I think this tells us two things about him. First, the conversation wasn't a disaster at all - he did a perfectly reasonable job of answering Mrs Duffy's concerns. The only conclusion you can draw is he simply isn't comfortable with anyone questioning his record. And second, his immediate instinct is to blame someone else. I think it is fair to say that neither of these are great attributes in a Leader.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
