Friday 16th April - 20 days to polling day
16/04/2010 23:39:00

Spent the day in Addiscombe today, which is also a key marginal ward for the Council elections. We won it off Labour four years ago and our trio of young councillors - Maria Garcia, Russell Jackson and Andrew Price - have done a really good job, standing up for local residents even if that has meant taking a different position from the Conservative administration at times. Russell is standing down because he is moving to Bromley and our new candidate is Rob King, who is a local resident and active member of the Canning and Clyde Road Residents Association and will I am sure be a good addition to the team.

We were joined this afternoon by Lord Bowness, who ran Croydon Council with such distinction from 1976 to 1994 (apart from a year off as Mayor). We met lots of people who have yet to make up their mind so with just 20 days to go clearly there is everything still to play for.

This evening it was off to a house meeting in Shirley. I hope to do a lot more of these meetings over the next 20 days. Essentially someone kindly offers to host a meeting at their home and invites round 10-15 of their neighbours. I say a few words at the start about who I am and why I am standing and then answer any questions they have. Last night's meeting lasted nearly two and a half hours and covered everything from a local development to overseas aid and everything in between.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
