Judge us by our actions, not our promises
08/04/2010 09:51:00

Last night, I saw a letter that Labour's council candidates for New Addington are delivering.

In it, they say "New Addington was designed as a small town but it has never been given the resources to fulfil its destiny". It then goes on to list various things the Labour candidates will do if the people of New Addington vote for them (most of them perfectly sensible).

By my reckoning, New Addington has had Labour councillors for the last 40 years. Labour had control of Croydon Council between 1994 and 2006. I agree with them that New Addington has been overlooked in the past (since the Conservatives took control of the Council by contrast we have seen a number of roads resurfaced, hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on refurbishing the pool, the new Addington Heights home for the elderly and improvements to Milne Park and Addington Vale in the pipeline with work underway on a new plan to provide a supermarket and new pool, library and community facilities on Central Parade) but why didn't they do something about it when they had the chance. You should judge politicians by their actions, not the promises they make at election time.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
