A fair deal for New Addington
02/03/2010 09:43:00

New Addington residents have long felt the area doesn’t get a fair deal from Croydon Council. Since we took control of the Council a few years ago we have worked hard to change that perception.

At the end of last year, the Council organised a number of events to develop a new plan to regenerate Central Parade, following the successful village green application which put paid to the previous scheme (which wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea in any case).

That plan will be published later this year but clearly it is going to take some time to implement. However, lots of other ideas also came out of the community events and Croydon Council has secured £270,000 from the government to take these forward including:

- more spot checks at shops to make it harder for under-age youngsters to get access to alcohol;

- more regular visits to flytipping hotspots to keep your streets clean;

- a new project called Loops, which allows young people to try out new activities; and

- £5,000 towards People’s Day and the Carnival.

We are also looking at security measures such as gates and improved street lighting and increased police patrols, tackling antisocial motorbike riders, and more school visits from police and fire officers to help keep kids on the straight and narrow.

This funding is in addition to all the other investment that is going into the area - £300,000 on the pool this year and a further £300,000 next year, extra money on road maintenance, improvements to Milne Park and Addington Vale and the new resource centre for elderly residents at Addington Heights which will open later this year.

We are determined to ensure that New Addington gets a fair deal.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
