Two stories that show why we need change
18/02/2010 14:09:00

There are two stories in the news today that show why we need change in this country.

First the news that for the first time since records began the Government had to borrow money in January. Even when times are tough, the Government is usually in the black in January because of corporation tax receipts and a surge in self-assessment payments. These figures underline the need for the Government to come up with a credible plan to get borrowing under control - something Gordon Brown seems unable to do.

Second, the news that Sir Nicholas Winterton MP has denounced plans to reduce first-class travel by MPs, telling the BBC that you get a "totally different type of people" in standard-class train carriages. Further evidence, if any were needed, that we need a new generation of MPs who understand that serving in Parliament is a privilege, not an entitlement to perks not available to those you are there to serve. I'm ashamed to say that Sir Nicholas is a Conservative (good to see the Party make it clear that his remarks represent "the out-of-touch views of a soon-to-retire backbench MP .. [which] .. do not in any way represent the views of David Cameron or those of the Conservative Party") but there are MPs of all parties who share this sense of entitlement.

We desperately need a new government that will tackle the deficit and restore trust in our politics.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
