Thank you

It is just over seven weeks since the General Election at which I ceased to be your Member of Parliament. I have now finished winding up my office, so this will be my final message to you.

It has been a privilege to represent my home town in Parliament for the last seven years and I will be forever grateful to those of you who put your trust in me in 2010 and again in 2015. I hope my successor Sarah Jones gets the same satisfaction from the role that I’ve had and I wish her all the luck in the world because her successes over the next few years will be the town’s successes too.

I wanted to end by saying a few thank yous.

First, to my family for their support. Being an MP is a privilege, but it is also hard work - there were very few days over the last seven years when I didn’t spend at least some time at work and that takes its toll on family life.

Second, to the amazing people who worked for me - Sara, Tina and Jackie at my office on Wickham Road and Jason and Felicia at my office in Parliament. To the extent that people thought I was a good local MP, it was as much down to their hard work as my efforts and one of the undeserved consequences of the result is that when I lost my job they lost their jobs too.

And third and finally to the people of Croydon Central for the kindness that the vast majority of you, whatever your party politics, have shown me over the last seven years, particularly in the tough times after the 2011 riots and last year’s tram crash.

The election result hasn’t changed my passion for politics, which for all its flaws is the best way of resolving our differences and changing our country for the better. As you may know, shortly after the election the Prime Minister asked me to serve as her Chief of Staff in 10 Downing Street. This is a hugely important role, but I will miss representing Croydon.

Once again, thank you for giving me the opportunity to do so and for your kindness over the last seven years.

Gavin

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
