My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Manchester in the wake of Monday night's horrific terrorist attack and in particular with the family and friends of those who were killed or injured. As a father of three boys, my heart goes out to the parents whose children will not be coming home after what should have been a special night out. I think the Prime Minister spoke for us all when she said:

"All acts of terrorism are cowardly attacks on innocent people, but this attack stands out for its appalling, sickening cowardice - deliberately targeting innocent, defenceless children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives...We struggle to comprehend the warped and twisted mind that sees a room packed with young children not as a scene to cherish, but as an opportunity for carnage".

Over the coming days the people of Manchester will rally as they did after the IRA bombing in 1996 and as Londoners did after 7/7. The news reports of people opening up their houses to strangers and the professional of our wonderful emergency services are reminders that the worst in human nature always brings out the best in others and that love will eventually triumph over hate.

We will identify and bring to justice those who helped plan this attack and we will redouble our efforts to confront the ideology behind it, a perversion of Islam - one of the world's great religions. We will ensure that our security services have the resources they need and the appropriate powers without compromising the fundamental freedoms on which our society is built. What we will not do is fall into the trap the terrorists have set for us by turning against British Muslims.

As a mark of respect to the victims, I have cancelled all campaigning for the General Election until further notice. We will make a decision about when to resume campaigning as the situation becomes clearer, but in the meantime I hope you will understand why we are not knocking on your door.

Commenting on my blog

I welcome readers' comments on my blog. Unfortunately, sometimes people go too far and use blog sites to post comments which are abusive or defamatory to third parties. For this reason, your comments, posted using the form on this page, don't appear until they have been moderated, to make sure that they don't cross that line.

My policy is that I will always let comments appear from people who disagree with me, in a spirit of promoting reasoned debate. However, I will not allow comments to be posted which are defamatory to someone else, or which are racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise likely to fail a 'public decency' test.

Consequently, there may be some hours delay after you post your comment until it appears on the public pages.
