Unemployment in Croydon Central falls yet again
18/09/2014 06:50:00

I had a hectic day yesterday and missed the publication of the labour market data for August.

It showed that 1,807 of my constituents claimed Job Seekers Allowance (JSA). That's down 50 or 2.7 per cent in the last month and 660 or 24.7 per cent on a year ago.

Of the 1,807 Croydon Central residents claiming JSA in August, 435 were between the ages of 18 and 24. That's up 25 or 6.1 per cent in the last month but down 150 or 25.6 per cent on a year ago.

Unemployment in Croydon Central is now 1,136 or 38.6 per cent lower than when Labour left office and youth unemployment is 335 or 43.5 per cent lower.

Across the country, the number of people claiming JobSeeker's Allowance fell below 1 million for the first time since the great recession. More people are in work today than at any time in this country's history - 1.8 million more than when Labour left office.

Each month when I tweet the latest good news on jobs, various Labour activists reply claiming that all these new jobs are part-time or zero-hour contracts. The truth is that two-thirds of them are in higher skilled occupations and three-quarters of them are full-time.

There is absolutely no room for complacency. There are still far too many people out of work or in part time work when they would like a full time job. But these figures show that the Government was right to take tough choices to get the deficit under control. Labour opposed those tough choices - Ed Miliband said they would lead to a million more unemployed. They got it wrong when they were in government, borrowing too much money in the good times, and now we know they were wrong about how to clean up the mess too.
