Construction of IYLO block set to resume
04/06/2013 17:00:00

More good news: building work will soon be restarting on the ‘IYLO’ tower at the north end of Wellesley Road.

The original investor got into financial difficulties in June 2011 and the site has been left boarded up for the last two years, doing no good whatsoever for the town’s reputation.

Work will restart shortly following the conclusion of successful negotiations between the council and the building’s new owner, Regency Homes, who purchased the half-built construction project – now known as Island – last year.

Croydon planning officers have spent the past few months in detailed discussions with representatives of Regency Homes to ensure the scheme was viable and all the necessary agreements were reached.

The new planning deal includes a requirement that all work is completed within two years so hopefully we’ll see some encouraging progress in the near future.

Hate to say it like this... but about bloody time. Who on earth let a company start building there if they didn't have the cash to complete it when they started?

Also... will this be the 'affordable' housing Croydon needs? unlike the 300k-1.2 million prices of Saffron Square. I mean if we are going to have 1.5 billion spent on the whitgift center... don't the shop workers working there need somewhere to live?

At last some movement. I am still concerned that the structure has become corrupted as it has been internally exposed for so long. A new building allows for some exposure to the elements during the period of the development but this has been unnaturally exposed with internal elements which are not weatherproof left open for over 2 years. I wouldn't like to be the surveyor who has to make that judgement call for a mortgagee. I suspect that some indemnity guarantee will be needed.
