The previous Labour administration here in Croydon significantly reduced spending on road maintenance. When we took control of the Council three years ago, we inherited a multi-million pound backlog. We have increased spending on this vital area but it is going to take time to clear the backlog and the bad weather earlier this year has exacerbated the problem.
The Council has now confirmed which roads will be completely reconstructed between now and May 2010 and the following roads in Croydon Central were on the list:
- part of Albert Road (from Harrington Road to Dundee Road);
- Arnhem Drive;
- Howley Road;
- part of King Henry’s Drive (from Vulcan Way to Arnhem Drive);
- Longhurst Road;
- Lower Addiscombe Road (from Bingham Road to Shirley Road);
- Shirley Road (from Addiscombe Road to Lower Addiscombe Road); and
- St Peters Road.
In addition, Homestead Way from Thorpe Close to King Henry’s Drive will be resurfaced and Carmichael Road and Fitzjames Avenue will receive surface treatment.
