Honouring our debt to the Gurkhas
29/04/2009 23:12:00

The Government’s attempt to deny Gurkhas the right to settle here when they are happy to allow thousands of economic migrants to do so every year was truly shameful. These people have fought for this country. We owe them a huge debt.

It was good to see the Conservatives working with the Liberal Democrats to force the Government to think again and those Labour MPs who had the courage not to vote with the Government today can hold their heads high too.

Today’s vote has clearly undermined the Prime Minister political authority but more importantly the fact that he thought it was acceptable to treat veterans in this way shows that he no longer has any moral authority.
