Saffron Square – demonstrating a positive future for Croydon 12/09/2012 09:08:00
Last Friday I visited the Saffron Square development on Wellesley Road. The first phase of the development - the buildings forming the square - is currently under construction, with the first people moving in at the start of 2013. The second phase - a 45 storey tower - will get underway when all the units in the first phase have been sold.
This video, designed to market the development, gives a good feel for what the scheme will look like when completed:
The developer, Berkeley Homes, have made really good use of a constrained site. Views differ on tall buildings but I think this is a good one that will add to the Croydon skyline and, unlike the proposed Menta tower, it is in the right part of town.
As you can see if you go and look at the show apartments, the interior design is of a high quality intended to cater for young professionals as well as more elderly people who want to downsize to a town centre location.
If we want to tackle the housing shortage we face and improve the reputation of our town, we need more developments like this - and, just as important, the affordable rented housing that is being built off site as one of the planning conditions.
If you're interested in developments in the town centre, I held a public meeting about this back in July which you can read about here.
