Muhammad Ali and David Beckham took to the stage together at the Beyond Sport Summit recently to present the inaugural Generation Ali Beyond Sport Award - which recognises service, leadership, and action in the community - to Matiullah Haidar, a teenager who was cared for by Croydon Council.
19-year-old Matiullah, who lost most of his family in the conflict in Afghanistan, came to the UK as a refugee four years ago. He is now an integral part of Croydon-based sports charity Cricket for Change. He coaches sport and supports refugees as a skilled translator.
As part of his role as one of the founding members of Beyond Sport's Young Advisory Panel, he will be flown by British Airways to the Beyond Sport United conference to be held at Yankee Stadium in New York on November 13th 2012.
Despite having a difficult start to life, Matiullah has fought to act as a role model for hundreds of young people. He is an inspiration and demonstrates the positive nature of most young people in our town.
