There are thousands of people around Croydon who give time to help those less fortunate than themselves. Some do it on a permanent basis, caring for a relative or a neighbour or volunteering for a charity; others help out in an emergency. They don’t seek fame or glory, but it’s always welcome when they get some recognition.
Gill and Derek Towler opened the community centre in New Addington as a rest centre for those who had to evacuate their homes, police officers and Council workers during the riots last year and ran it unsupported through most of the night.
Without their help, the task of protecting our town would have been made just that little bit harder. It’s for that reason that the Deputy Prime Minister has invited them both to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in the magnificent Olympic Stadium as official guests of the Government.
It's a shame all those who helped out in the aftermath of the riots can't get similar recognition.
