Yesterday afternoon, I had a behind-the-scenes tour of my local cinema, Vue in the Grants complex.
It was interesting to see the new state-of-the-art automated projectors they have recently installed. However, the stand-out thing I learned was the difference in custom between Vue Grants and their slightly older cinema on the Purley Way. Vue Grants has about 450,000 customers every year, Vue Purley Way about 650,000. They attribute that difference to the cost of parking in Croydon town centre. That's a pretty dramatic indicator of the damage high parking prices are doing to our town.
Overall the UK film industry contributes £4.3 billion to our Gross Domestic Product, paying about £1.1 billion pounds in tax and directly employing almost 34,000 people. It was great to learn a bit more about it and I'll be taking Mrs B to watch The Hunger Games this weekend.
