Government announces more money for additional school places in Croydon
13/12/2011 21:09:00

Six weeks ago, I was celebrating the fact that Michael Gove had found an additional £8 million to help Croydon Council provide additional school places for the increasing number of children in the borough of school age.

I said at the time that this was only a fraction of what we are going to need to spend over the next few years so I am delighted that Michael has today announced capital funding for 2012-3 and Croydon schools will receive a further £16 million (£9 million to help provide additional places and £7 million for maintenance of existing buildings). And the Secretary of State has yet to allocate the additional £600 million that the Chancellor announced in his autumn statement so we should get a further allocation during the financial year.

I have been lobbying on this issue ever since I got elected as an MP and I am really grateful to the Secretary of State for listening to the concerns I and the Council have raised with him.
