As noted in a previous post, one of the things I have been working on over the last few months is setting up a Social Action team to work on community projects throughout the constituency. Everyone says there isn't as much community spirit these days as there used to be but when I am out canvassing I am struck by just how many people do still care about their local neighbourhood and want to make it a better place to live. If all those people gave just an hour or two of their time every month, together we could make a huge difference.
To date, about 60 people of all political persuasions have replied to one of my leaflets or email bulletins to say that they are interested in helping out.
This morning, a group of us, including local councillors Eddy Arram and Avril Slipper, were out in Long Lane Wood clearing up the litter that some people unfortunately leave behind. A lot of it was beer cans concentrated around the benches, which I guess have been left behind by under-age drinkers. They were accompanied by a distinctive carrier bag so I will be asking Council officers to do a test purchase at the store concerned to see if they are selling alcohol to under-age children.
If you would like to be notified about future clean ups or there’s a spot near where you live that could do with a clean-up, email me at email@example.com.
