Earlier today, I heard the shocking news of the untimely death of the Mayor of Croydon, Cllr Jonathan Driver.
Jonathan was elected to Croydon Council just under three years ago. He was a hard-working and effective advocate for the people of Waddon and was elected Mayor at May's Annual Council meeting. In my role as a Parliamentary Candidate, I often attended the same functions as him and was always struck by the pride he had in the office he held, his passion for our town and the interest he took in everyone he met. I will particularly remember his dry Yorkshire sense of humour, best displayed in his role as quizmaster, in which - as a teacher by profession - he had a natural authority. I recall one occasion where I dared to use my blackberry to question one of his answers and was told in no uncertain terms that the quizmaster was always right and that my blackberry was hereby confiscated.
Jonathan will be sorely missed and my thoughts are with his family.
