Government announces enterprise and growth package for Croydon
17/08/2011 19:35:00

The Government has today announced a £20 million enterprise and growth package for Tottenham and Croydon that will kickstart economic regeneration, support business and deliver new job opportunities.

We had originally bid for part of town centre to be one of the new Enterprise Zones being announced today but the Council was concerned about the planning freedoms that come with Enterprise Zone status - we know from recent experience how controversial major planning applications in this part of town can be - and the Government wasn't convinced that Enterprise Zone status was the right model for Croydon.

The money that the Government is providing - which will be supplemented by money from the Mayor of London - will allow the Council to offer business rate discounts similar to those in Enterprise Zones but give it the flexibility to use it in other ways too. All in all, a pretty good result though like Oliver Twist I will continue to ask for more.
