The world's largest chemistry experiment
22/06/2011 21:08:00

This afternoon, I was delighted to welcome students from my old school Trinity and the Oasis Academy Shirley Park to Parliament. Together with thousands of other students from a number of different countries, they were taking part in what is almost certainly the world’s largest chemistry experiment testing the acidity of water from rivers around the world.

The experiment has been organised by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry as part of the International Year of Chemistry 2011, established by the UN to mark the 100th anniversary of Marie Curie's winning the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911. Many thanks to Stephen Benn from the Royal Society of Chemistry, who happens to be a constituent and at some risk of immersion obtained a sample from the River Thames just outside Parliament.
