An inspiring evening
24/03/2011 22:17:00

This evening, I was one of the judges at the Croydon final of Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge, a public speaking competition for Year 10 students from schools in London and Essex. Students from nearly all of Croydon’s state schools took part and the standard was incredibly high - better than some of the speeches I have to listen to in the House of Commons. I love attending events like these because they give the lie to the negative portrayal of our young people in the media.

The winner was Joanna McGibbon from Harris Academy South Norwood but I always think it is a shame on occasions like this that there can only be one winner so I have invited all the finalists to a tour of the House of Commons.
