This evening, I went to a joint meeting of Spring Park, Monks Orchard and Shrublands Residents Associations to discuss the future of Shirley Library and Transport for London’s plans for the Wickham Road/Bridle Road/Monks Orchard Road junction, which has been a source of concern for local residents as long as I can remember.
The Council’s consultation on the future of six of its branch libraries, including Shirley, has now closed and we await their decision. I hope they will listen to the case we have made that if they have to save money people can live with a reduction in funding (over 50 local residents have contacted me to date volunteering to help out) but they must not under any circumstances close the library altogether - if they do that, it will never re-open.
On the Wickham Road/Bridle Road/Monks Orchard Road junction, our GLA member Steve O’Connell kindly brought along a Transport for London official, who took us through their plans, which will significantly improve pedestrian safety and make things safer for vehicle traffic travelling along the Wickham Road. We asked him to go away and look again at options to deal with the conflicting right turns from Bridle and Monks Orchard Roads into Wickham Road.
