Council listens to local residents on parking
08/02/2011 08:30:00

Friday's Croydon Advertiser reported that, having considered the results of its consultation process, Croydon Council will drop its plans to increase the hours of operation of the outer zones of the Croydon Controlled Parking Zone to 8am-midnight seven days a week.

Yesterday evening, I spoke to Cllr Phil Thomas, who will chair Wednesday night’s meeting of the Traffic Management Cabinet Committee that will take the final decision, and it looks like our lobbying has indeed paid off. He tells me that the recommendation to the Committee is not to proceed with the proposals apart from in a few roads around Mayday Hospital, which are not in my constituency but where residents apparently want something done.

I will still be attending the meeting to make sure the right decision is made but I know how concerned many people have been that the consultation exercise was a sham so I wanted to let you know the good news straight away. It is great to know that we have a Council that listens - I think this decision will do a lot to restore people’s faith in local democracy.

I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to object and the residents’ associations and groups who made sure everyone was aware of the proposals – without such strong public support, we wouldn’t have been able to convince the Council to change its mind.
