Debating the war in Afghanistan
09/09/2010 23:52:00

Today, the House of Commons - thanks to reforms introduced by the new Government which among other things give some Parliamentary time over to issues that backbenchers wish to debate - finally got to vote on the war in Afghanistan.

The motion was "That this House supports the continued deployment of UK armed forces in Afghanistan". I abstained on this - the first time I have voted against the Whip - because, though I am happy to give the new Government's strategy a few years to see if it works, I do not support an open-ended commitment. If we are still not making progress in a few years' time, then we should bring our troops home.
