This morning, I formally opened the Edridge Road Community Health Centre, a new GP-led health centre on the ground floor of Impact House open 365 days a year from 8am to 8pm.
It includes a new GP surgery offering bookable and walk-in appointments for both registered and unregistered patients, a sexual health service, a pharmacy, an emergency dental service and in the future a breast screening service. The centre is being run by The Practice plc, who already run similar centres elsewhere in the country.
NHS Croydon deserve a lot of credit for how they have handled the polyclinic idea. Most people want to continue going to a traditional GP practice but others - those who work long hours or move around a lot - will prefer this walk-in service.
And at a time when the Government and Council are having to take lots of tough decisions, it was great to open an improvement to local public services.
