Lest we forget...

This morning I went to the annual Remembrance Sunday civic service at the Fairfield Halls. As usual, Canon Colin Boswell gave a thoughtful and highly relevant sermon, reminding us that the victims of conflict are not just those killed or maimed on the battlefield by referring to the death of three telephonists when the Town Hall was bombed during the Battle of Britain 70 years ago.

Towards the end of the service, Jagdish Sharma, a leading member of the Hindu community in Croydon, read out the epitaph on the Kohima memorial, which commemorates a key battle in the Far East that thwarted the Japanese plan to invade India. For me, this short epitaph summarises what Remembrance Sunday is all about:

“When you go home

Tell them of us and say

For their tomorrow

We gave our today”
