It is the nature of my job that people normally contact me when something has gone wrong, so I was delighted earlier today to receive the following email from a constituent who wanted to say well done to the Council, police and Transport for London:
"One recent Sunday afternoon in a high gale, a large mature oak tree crashed down and completely blocked busy Orchard Avenue in Shirley. Local residents quickly established no-one was hurt, then called Croydon Council's out-of-hours service to report the incident and get help.
"Despite being a Bank Holiday weekend, a multi-agency team of Police, Council contractors and Transport For London staff quickly arrived. They re-directed traffic, chopped up the fallen tree and cleared it away. Orchard Avenue was fully re-opened to traffic less than 5 hours after the tree fell.
"Councillor Janet Marshall then arranged for the Council to examine other trees in the area to make sure there were no others at risk.
"A very prompt response to a major disruption!"
