Some good news for people suffering with Alzheimer's
08/10/2010 06:06:00

Yesterday, the National Institute for Heath and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published draft guidance which, if it is confirmed, would make three drugs - Aricept, Exelon and Reminyl - available on the NHS for people in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (they are currently restricted to people in the moderate stages) and make a fourth drug - Ebixa, which isn't currently available on the NHS at all - available to people in the moderate to late stages.

These treatments don't work for everyone but they do enable many people to recognise their loved ones for longer. I lost my Dad to Alzheimer's so I can tell you from personal experience how much that means.

Many congratulations to the Alzheimer's Society, which has been campaigning for this decision since the treatments were controversially restricted in 2007.
