As mentioned in a previous post, each year I do a sponsored walk around the boundaries of the constituency.
Last year, it was in aid of Help for Heroes, the year before the Croydon branch of the Alzheimer’s Society. This year's walk, which took place yesterday, was in aid of two charities, one local - Allstarz Gymnastics Club, who are based at Addington High School; and one national - Great Ormond Street Hospital, a charity close to the heart of my late colleague Cllr Lindsay Frost who tragically passed away on Good Friday.
I was joined for some or all of the route by a number of Conservative colleagues, family members and members of the Allstarz Club. 19 of us did the whole route (about 17 miles) - myself, Cllr Tony Pearson, Jayne Laville from our Fieldway action team and 16 members of Allstarz. It took us just under 8 hours, about an hour longer than last year - it certainly felt like the constituency has grown! If you would to sponsor me, you can either send a cheque made payable to ‘'Allstarz Gymnastics Club’ to me care off 36 Brighton Road CR8 2LG or, if you'd like your money to go to Great Ormond Street, you can sponsor me online here (and automatically reclaim Gift Aid so that they get more money).
One final thought: lots of people complain to me about the behaviour of young people in their neighbourhood. Of course, some people do behave unacceptably but it's important to remember that most young people are decent, law-abiding people. Those who joined me yesterday were great company and had given up their Sunday to raise funds for their club. Two of them when they politely approached adults in central Croydon to ask for sponsorship were told to "F*** off". It's not just young people who sometimes behave anti-socially.
